Buckland Valley campgrounds
Four hours north east of Melbourne, you will find 8 campgrounds and 2 picnic areas scattered along the Buckland River, south of the township of Porepunkah. Each is set close to the river, among the tall trees of the Buckland Valley State Forest.
All are free of charge, you don’t need to make a booking and dogs are welcome.
The river is ideal for fishing or a cool swim on a hot day.
All campgrounds at Ah Youngs Campground, Camp Flat, Shippens Flat, New Chum Flat, Lenister Flat, Good Hope Flat, Head-Race Flat, Yurluk, and The Bend have toilets and firepits.
The area is a fantastic base for 4WDing, sightseeing, fishing, bushwalking, hunting, horse riding and prospecting. If prospecting, make sure you have a miner's right and obey prospecting regulations.
Take your time and explore the state forests and nearby Alpine and Mount Buffalo national parks.

Enjoy the water safely
When around water, be water safe and stay aware of changes in creek levels or conditions.
Always set up camp at least 20 metres from the water. Help keep our creeks clean—wash your dishes in a bucket, not the creek and dispose of soap and detergents at least 50 metres from the water.
If you’re staying in one of the campgrounds without a toilet, bury human waste at least 100 metres away from waterways.
How to get there
Improving Buckland Valley State Forest for visitors
Over the coming years we are investing $14.2 million to improve tracks and trails, campgrounds and toilets around the state. This includes upgrades at key locations like Buckland Valley Visitor Experience Area.
