About this campground
On the Macalister River, Cheynes Bridge offers easy access for caravans and camper trailers. It is a great spot for families to camp.
There are several separated overnight camping areas on the east side of the bridge. A day visitor area on the west side is ideal for picnics.
Macalister River is great for swimming in summer, paddle sport activities and fishing.
This site is a popular destination for group 4WD trips. There are medium and difficult 4WD tracks in the forest nearby or further north in the High Country.
Campers can also enjoy The Holding Paddock, which offers camping nearby on the opposite side of the river.
20 minutes north of Cheynes Bridge is the small township of Licola - a gateway to the Victorian High Country.
Nearby 4WD adventures
Cheynes Bridge is accessible by 2WD along the sealed Licola Road which connects Heyfield to Licola. However for those looking to explore more of the surrounding High Country during their stay, a 4WD is recommended.
This site can be used as a starting point for experienced four-wheel drivers doing the popular Wonnangatta Iconic 4WD Tour, which can be accessed from Licola via the Tamboritha Road.
This multi-day trip takes in several High Country Huts, as well as the breathtaking Pinnacles Lookout, Billy Goat Bluff Track and historic Wonnangatta Station.
