About this campground

Thomson Bridge is a small camping area perched above the Thomson River and surrounded by dense bushland.

The campground can be accessed on foot, bicycle or by vehicle from Walhalla Road. You'll find visitor facilities including wheelchair-friendly picnic tables, toilet, a shelter and access paths. This campground has 5 campsites and is best suited to smaller groups.

A convenient base

This site is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area by foot, bike, train or kayak. The historic Walhalla Goldfields Railway, Thomson River Canoe Trail, Poverty Point Bridge Walk and Walhalla Goldfields Rail Trail are all a short walk away. The historic gold mining township of Walhalla is less than 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes by train.

As this is a basic bush camping site, have a read of our Before you go page so you know what to expect. The campsites are free and can’t be booked, so plan ahead and have another option if visiting during peak periods.

Accessibility information

This small mostly flat campground offers a more accessible camping experience than most in state forests.

The single-cubicle toilet is accessible, with rails and adequate space to manoeuvre a wheelchair inside. There is a flat compacted gravel path to access the toilet.

The toilet, picnic shelter and communal fire pit can be accessed from the carpark via wide compacted mostly flat gravel paths.

There is a shelter with accessible picnic tables that a wheelchair can fit under.

There are no formed paths to the 5 campsites, so you need to be able to navigate the natural surfaces, which can be soft or bumpy depending on the location or weather. Being able to select which campsite you set up in gives you the ability to choose one that may be easier to access depending on your needs.

For those who may not be able to access the camping areas due to a lack of paths or smooth surfaces, the picnic area offers an accessible place for a day visit.

While access to the site is 2WD, the road can be rough and is currently unsuitable for low clearance vehicles, such as some that may be used to transport wheelchairs.
