About this walk

Explore the incredible natural beauty of the Boola Boola State Forest and Tyers Park. This walk has some steep and rough sections and can take up to 6 hours one way.

The track meanders through magnificent hillside silvertop and messmate forest and gullies of ferns, acacia and flowering native dogwood. Look out for the abundant native birds and animals and over 30 species of orchid. There are lots of wildflowers to see in Spring.

It is normally walked from Moondarra Dam off W18 track down to Wirilda Environment Park in the Latrobe Valley, however some intersecting roads such as W12 track and W3 track enable the walk to be completed in shorter sections. Plan your walk if attempting it one way and organise for a pick up at the other end if required.

See some of the area's history as the track passes the remnants of an old lime kiln and quarry off W3 track. Just past here you will cross the river over an old pipeline bridge. The pipes used to supply water to Traralgon from the weir near W12 track.

The pipeline bridge usually sits right on the water level so you will most likely need to wade through the water at this point. Be careful around water and aware that when wet the river level may be high and you will be unable to cross safely.

At the end of the walk is the Tyers River Pumping Station with its weir and the grounds of the Wirilda Environment Park with picnic and toilet facilities. For fit and advanced hikers recharge here before completing the return journey if time and weather allow, making the walk a total of 25 km.
