About this tour
This tour links the rural towns of Omeo and Dargo via Mt Birregun, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
It is an easy drive over the summer months, but the roads can get wet or have snow on them over winter.
The tour starts at Omeo’s Livingstone Creek Park - the base for the Omeo Mountain Bike Trails, with picnic and overnight camping facilities.
Visit the impressive 90 km long Jirnkee Water Race, built during Victoria’s gold mining boom to bring water from the Wentworth River to wash gravel in the hunt for gold.
Stop at Dogs Grave, a memorial to a stockman’s dog from around 1860, at what was likely a camp site along the old stock route.
Stop off at the Mt Birregun (helipad) Lookout for spectacular views over the Wentworth River and towards the Gippsland plains. On a clear day you can see the ocean.
Camping on the tour
If you’re looking for a 4WD challenge take the optional side trip (Grade – Difficult) to Harrisons Cut or continue on and stay the night at one of several campgrounds along the Dargo River - Ollies Jump Up, Jimmy Iverson’s, Italian Flat or Two Mile Creek.
