Enjoy a string of scenic creekside campgrounds, picnic areas and activities near the tourist towns of Beechworth and Yackandandah.

Yackandandah Creek campgrounds

Three and a half hours north east of Melbourne are 9 campgrounds scattered among the trees along Yackandandah Creek in the Stanley State Forest.

All are free of charge, you don’t need to make a booking and dogs are welcome.

The unpowered camping areas are suitable for tents and, depending on which campground you select, for camper trailers or small caravans. The campgrounds are numbered and vary in size and the facilities they offer. There are toilets at campground 7, campground 8 and campground 9 as well as the Yack Tracks trailhead and Yackandandah trail bike visitor area.

This is an excellent location for mountain biking, walking, four-wheel driving, camping, fishing, horse riding, prospecting and enjoying the tourist attractions in the nearby historic villages and towns.

If prospecting, make sure you have a miner's right and obey prospecting regulations.

Mountain biking at Yackandandah

Keen mountain bikers love visiting and camping in the area to ride the Yackandandah Trails. The purpose-built mountain bike network of more than 90 km of singletrack includes the Indigo Epic Trail.

It features easy to intermediate-level trails and an all abilities trail suitable for those riding adaptive mountain bikes. The Yack Tracks trailhead is a great spot to plan your riding adventures

Enjoy the water safely

When around water, be water safe and stay aware of changes in creek levels or weather conditions.

Always set up camp at least 20 metres from the water. Help keep our creeks clean—wash your dishes in a bucket, not the creek and dispose of soap and detergents at least 50 metres from the water.

If you’re staying in one of the campgrounds without a toilet, bury human waste at least 100 metres away from waterways.

How to get there

Improving Stanley State Forest for visitors

Over the coming years we are investing $14.2 million to improve tracks and trails, campgrounds and toilets around the state. This includes upgrades at key locations like the Yackandandah Creek area.
